Hello, how can we help you?

Tax requirements for orders dispatched to Australia

Quick answer

As of November 2022, Reverb collects tax on some orders that are delivered to Reverb buyers in Australia. The law requires Reverb to collect goods and services tax (GST) on certain goods sold to Australian buyers from overseas up to the value of $1,000 AUD. Reverb collects tax on orders that are delivered to Australia on the seller’s behalf. As a seller, you might need to add extra information to the customs forms on these packages.

Reverb will collect and pay tax on your behalf

Reverb will collect a 10% GST on orders if all of the following apply:

  • You, the seller, are located outside Australia.
  • The package is being delivered to a buyer in Australia.
  • The total value of the package is less than or equal to $1,000 AUD.

If an order in your shop meets these requirements, Reverb will automatically include the tax in the buyer’s total. The buyer will pay the tax at checkout, and Reverb will be responsible for paying it to the Australian tax office (ATO). Additionally, if these conditions are met and Reverb is required to collect GST, any seller tax policies set up for buyers in Australia will not be applied.

Orders placed on or after 13 May 2026

For orders placed through PayPal, we’ll deduct the tax amount from your payment before it’s sent to your PayPal account. Reverb is not required to charge GST to the buyer if the total value of the package is more than $1,000 AUD or if the transaction is between buyers and sellers both located in Australia.

Orders placed before 13 May 2026

For orders placed through PayPal, Reverb will send the GST collected to you as part of the payment. Then, Reverb will add the tax to your monthly statement so that we can pay the tax to Australian authorities. Reverb is not required to charge GST to the buyer if the total value of the package is more than $1,000 AUD or if the transaction is between buyers and sellers both located in Australia.

You may need to include extra info on customs forms

Reverb will automatically collect and pay the tax for you, but you may need to include extra information on the customs form depending on your delivery method.

If you’re a seller located outside of Australia who receives an order from a buyer in Australia that is less than or equal to $1,000 AUD and you dispatch using a commercial carrier, such as Fedex, you may need to include the following information on the customs form before posting it:

  • Reverb’s Australian Reference Number (ARN), which is ARN: 3000 1886 2815.
  • The item total, postage costs, GST charged, and order total.

Australian customs authorities may look at this customs form to confirm that GST was paid on the order. Multiple items bought in the same order should be delivered in the same package. You may want to check with your preferred carrier for more guidance on where to enter the information above.

You can always update the countries you are delivered to on your listings or in your delivery profiles.
