Hello, how can we help you?

What precautions can I take to protect my package during delivery?

Quick answer

The best way to protect your package during delivery is to use a sturdy box, secure all loose components in separate packaging, and fill all empty space in the box (without overpacking). Do a shake test on the final box to ensure nothing moves or rattles. We always recommend adding protection to your package — Reverb Safe Delivery if you're using a Reverb label, or carrier compensation if you're sending directly through them. For packing specific gear, see our delivery guides.

Packing materials

Use these materials to keep your item protected in transit:

  • Shipping box. Leave 2 inches for padding on all sides of the item. If reusing a box, make sure it's still sturdy and remove all old labels and stickers. Carriers sometimes charge extra if old labels are left on.
  • Harmless packing material. Kraft paper is best, but rigid cardboard inserts, packing peanuts, or egg crates also work.
  • Packing tape.

Pack it right

  1. Secure all loose components and wrap in separate packaging. You can place these items in the case pocket or elsewhere in the box.
  2. Fill all empty space in the case and box with packing material. Avoid newspaper or anything with ink, which can transfer and damage your item, and avoid bubble wrap in hot weather since it can stick and cause damage.
  3. Do the “shake test”. Shake the box to make sure nothing is rattling or moving. Carriers typically follow a "3-foot drop rule," meaning your package should survive a flat drop from 3 feet. ("Fragile" labels usually don't change how a package is handled, so pack for the drop.)

Protect your package

  • Add protection to your label. Add Reverb Safe Delivery when purchasing a label through Reverb. If your item is damaged in delivery, you'll work with our team directly instead of the carrier. Buying a label directly from a carrier? Purchase their compensation instead.
  • Photograph the package from all sides before drop-off. This helps support any damage claims if the item is damaged in transit.
  • Keep your drop-off receipt as a record of when the item was handed off to the carrier.
