Hello, how can we help you?

What is “Bump” and how does it work?

Quick answer

Reverb Bump helps put your gear in front of more buyers, increasing chances of a sale. You set a rate (a percentage of your item's sale price) and Reverb uses that rate to give your listing better placement in search results, on product pages, on the homepage, and in other spots across the site. You're only charged the Bump fee if your listing sells.

Here’s how it works

  • Set your Bump rate. Reverb recommends a rate based on our historical sales data and the current competition for your item. The minimum Bump percentage is 0.5% and the maximum is 30%.
  • Reverb promotes your listing. Your rate earns your listing better placement in search results, on product pages, on the homepage, and in other spots across the site. Placement isn't based on rate alone — your listing's quality also matters, including item price, shipping cost, and return policy, along with how likely buyers are to click your listing.
  • You pay only if your item sells. When a Bumped item sells, the Bump fee is your rate applied to the item total including shipping, but not tax. If the sale came from an offer, you're billed at the rate that was in effect when the offer was made, not the rate at the time of the sale. You'll see what you paid under “Total Bump Fees” in your earnings breakdown.

Where you'll find Bump and listing insights

Everything below lives on your Listings page, or in My Listings in the Reverb app.

  • The Insights panel groups your listings by what's happening with them — which are winning or eligible for top pick placement, which are priced above the market, which have buyers watching them, and more.
    • On the web, you’ll find this on the upper-left side.
    • In the app, you’ll tap Insights at the bottom of My Listings.
  • Recommendations on individual listings tell you the specific action to take, with a button to apply it.

If your listing does not have a Bump-related insight, you can still choose to Bump it for more exposure to buyers. To do this, find the listing and select More listing actions and Promote with Bump.

How to Bump a listing

You may have insights recommending a Bump rate, which you can add from the recommendation directly. To manually add a Bump rate, follow the directions below.

  1. Go to your Listings page.
  2. Find the listing you want to promote. If a listing is eligible for the top pick, you’ll see that suggested and can select Promote with Bump.
  3. For all other listings, select More listing actions and then Promote with Bump.
  4. Choose “Reverb's recommended rate”, or select Custom to set your own.
  5. Check the preview. This tells you whether your rate will win the top pick and how many competing listings you'll outrank. Select View product page to see the placement for yourself.
  6. Select Save and apply.
  1. From My Reverb, open My Listings.
  2. Tap the listing you want to promote.
  3. Under Manage your listing, tap Promote listing. If a listing is eligible for the top pick, you'll see that on the listing detail page and can select Promote with Bump.
  4. Choose Reverb's recommended rate, or select Custom to set your own.
  5. Check the preview. This tells you whether your rate will win the top pick and how many competing listings you'll outrank. Select View product page to see the placement for yourself.
  6. Select Save and apply.

To remove Bump from a listing:

  1. Go to your Listings page.
  2. Locate your listing, which you can also do by checking Bumped from the Reverb Bump listing filter.
  3. Select More listing actions on the right and select Manage bump rate.
  4. Enter 0%.
  5. Select Save and apply.

If an offer on a Bumped listing leads to a sale, you'll be billed at the Bump rate in effect when the initial offer was made.

Bump for brand new listings

Brand new gear can only be listed by authorized dealers.

Top pick

Every product page has one featured listing at the top: the top pick. Reverb chooses it from the brand new listings for that product based on price, listing quality, and Bump rate. On product pages with no brand new inventory, used listings compete for the spot instead.

When you win the top pick, your brand new listing gets premium placement. Brand new listings that aren't the top pick are only visible when “View more brand new” is selected and in general search when a buyer filters to brand new.

Top pick for brand new display

To help secure a winning top pick spot:

  • Bump your item. When eligible, we'll show you the bump rate that secures the top pick placement for your particular listing.*
  • Price your item appropriately.
  • Have a minimum 7-day return policy.
  • Offer free or expedited shipping. If you have the “quick shipper” badge, that helps, too.

*Top pick status is not guaranteed for a specific duration. Other sellers are able to adjust their listing and win the slot at any time.

What each brand new insight means

Your brand new listings that are connected to a product page on Reverb fall into one of these:

  • Top pick winner: You currently hold the featured slot on the product page.
  • Top pick eligible: Your listing could win the featured slot, but you either have not applied a Bump rate, or your Bump rate is lower than what is needed to secure the top pick placement. The recommendation shows the exact rate it would take to beat the current winner.
  • Low visibility: Your listing isn't Bumped at all. Buyers are unlikely to find it, because sellers who are Bumping the same product are being shown ahead of you.

You'll also see two engagement insights on any listing, new or used:

  • Has saves: At least one buyer has saved your listing.
  • In shopping carts: At least one buyer has your item in their cart.

How the recommended rate is calculated

For top pick eligible listings, the recommended rate is the minimum needed to beat the current top pick winner. It's calculated against live competition, so it changes as other sellers change their rates.

For low visibility listings, you'll see Reverb's standard recommended rate, which is typically 4.5%. You don’t need to hit a maximum rate since any rate at all improves your visibility, and a higher rate improves it further.

If you're winning the top pick with no Bump rate at all, you'll still see a recommendation of 0.5%. That's the minimum to qualify for Bump placements elsewhere on Reverb (search results, the homepage, item pages), so a small rate earns you visibility beyond the one product page you're already winning.

Bump for used listings

When a product page has no brand new listings, used listings compete for the top pick spot.

Used listings also get a broader set of recommendations than brand new. Instead of a single rate suggestion, Reverb looks at price, buyer interest, and how long the listing has been live, then tells you the one action most likely to gain more interest from buyers.

  • Priced above average: Based on our Price Guide and sales history, our system is letting you know that your listing price could be adjusted to sell faster.
Likely to sell with offers: Buyers are interested, but the listing hasn't sold. The recommended action is to send Direct Offers to the buyers who have saved your listing or added it to their cart.
  • Renew eligible: Your listing has been live more than 60 days and hasn't been renewed before. Renewing gives an aged listing a fresh opportunity to attract buyers.
  • Top pick eligible: Your listing could win the top pick slot if your Bump rate is increased.

How top pick works for used listings

A used listing competes for top pick only on product pages that have no brand new listings. If any seller has the item brand new, that page's featured slot goes to brand new inventory.

When several used listings qualify, Reverb picks the featured one the same way it does for brand new — by price, listing quality, and Bump rate.

If your used listing is priced above average, you can still Bump your listing. However, you’re more likely to win top pick placement with a used listing that is priced competitively and has a Bump rate. Bumping puts your listing in front of more buyers, but it can't make an above-market price look like a good deal.

FAQs

Why aren't all my brand new listings top pick eligible?

A listing is eligible only when it's connected to a product page. It also depends on your listing's condition, other listings connected to the product page, and the competition is close enough that raising your rate would actually win the slot. If another seller is far ahead on price or listing quality, a Bump rate may not help you win the top pick. To take the slot, you have to adopt the recommended rate.

I'm winning the top pick. What happens if another seller raises their rate?

You may lose the slot. Your listing moves back to “top pick eligible”, and you'll see a new recommendation reflecting the new winner's rate.

Do I have to Bump to win the top pick?

Not always. If no other qualified seller is Bumping that product, you can win at 0%. However, with competitive products, sellers usually Bump their listings.

What happens if there's a tie?

Occasionally two listings have identical price, quality attributes, and Bump rate. Tied listings share the top spot, rotating across page views. Recommendations always show what it would take to win.

Why does a price drop have to be 5%?

That's the threshold for Reverb to notify buyers who’ve saved your listing. A smaller drop changes your price, but doesn't trigger that notification.

How often do recommendations update?

They typically update in seconds.

I just applied Reverb’s recommended Bump rate to my listing to secure the top pick and don’t see it there. Why is this?

When you make a change to your listing, you may have to wait a few seconds and refresh your listing dashboard page to see the change take effect. If you apply our Bump recommendation to win the top pick, it may take a few minutes to see your listing in the top pick placement on the product page.

How do offers affect my Bump fee?

Two rules apply when a Bumped listing sells through an offer:

  • Your rate is locked in when the offer is made. You're billed at the Bump rate that was in effect at that point, even if you changed it before accepting. If you lower or remove your Bump rate while an offer is open, the original rate still applies to that sale.
  • Direct Offers on brand new listings are capped at 1.5%. If a brand new listing sells through a Direct Offer, your Bump fee won't go above 1.5%, regardless of what your rate is set to. If your rate is already below 1.5%, you pay that lower rate.
